What changes with every test is the specific manifestation of these principles in a real layout.
The Comparison Module That Hurt by Moving Up
One of the most instructive tests I have ever run involved a product comparison module on a high-consideration page. The hypothesis seemed sound: users want to compare options, the comparison module helps them compare, therefore placing it higher on the page should increase engagement and conversion.
It did not.
Moving the comparison module higher reduced engagement by 5.6%. Session replay data provided the explanation. Users arriving at the page needed contextual priming before they were ready to process a structured comparison. They needed to understand what they were comparing, why it mattered, and what the stakes were. The comparison module, positioned above this orientation content, met users before they were cognitively ready for it.

This is significant because the conventional worry about elevating phone options is cannibalization. If you make it easier to call, fewer people will complete the digital flow. But that is not what happened. What happened is that the users who were always going to call — who needed that reassurance and human contact before committing — now found the path they needed more easily. The users oriented toward digital completion were never going to call; the visual prominence of the phone option did not redirect them.
This speaks to a broader principle in visual hierarchy: on binary-choice interfaces, visual weight is not persuasion. It is triage. It routes users to the path that matches their intent. When your visual hierarchy matches your user segmentation, both paths perform better.
Visual Weight as Commitment Architecture: The Button vs. Text Link Test
The phone number result was about elevating visual weight. An equally powerful test demonstrated the conversion impact of reducing it.
The test changed a "Pay Later" option from an equal-weight button to a less prominent text link. The goal was to decrease the visual emphasis on the deferral option relative to the primary payment action.
Eight percent of users shifted from the "Pay Later" path to the primary action. No copy was changed. No pricing was changed. No incentives were added. The only variable was whether "Pay Later" appeared as a button or a text link.
This is affordance theory in its purest conversion form. Buttons signal action. They carry interaction weight because decades of interface design have trained users to recognize them as the primary mechanism for doing things. Text links signal navigation — a secondary, lower-commitment gesture. By demoting "Pay Later" from button to link, the visual design communicated a hierarchy: this is the primary action, that is a secondary option.
The 8% shift represents users who, under the original design, were choosing the deferral option not because they genuinely preferred it, but because visual equality between the two options made it feel like a legitimate equivalent choice. When the hierarchy was made explicit, they defaulted to the primary action.

A homepage variant that was 2,500 pixels shorter drove a 4x increase in bottom-of-page ZIP code entries — from a handful to dozens of. That is not a marginal improvement. That is a fundamentally different outcome produced by a single architectural change: making content that was previously below the practical scroll threshold visible to users who actually reach the bottom of the page.
The implication is stark. On a 4,000-pixel page, your bottom-of-page CTA is a conversion element for the small fraction of users who scroll to 4,000 pixels. On a 1,500-pixel page, the bottom CTA is a conversion element for everyone who reads past the hero. The "bottom of page" is not a fixed location in the user journey; it is a relative position that changes dramatically with total page length.
This connects directly to the fold question. The fold is real — not as a single pixel threshold, but as a scroll probability gradient. Every additional 500 pixels of page length reduces the probability that any given user will reach that depth. Elements below the practical scroll depth of your users are not just less effective; they are effectively absent.
The desktop and mobile dimensions of this principle are also worth noting. Desktop users, with their larger viewports, can see more of the page at once. In my testing, desktop users responded 10x more to copy changes than mobile users — because on desktop, more copy is visible simultaneously. The viewport is the design constraint. Writing a page for mobile means writing for a user who sees roughly 600-800 pixels at a time. Writing for desktop means writing for a user who sees 900-1,200 pixels. The same hierarchy decisions produce different outcomes on each device.

The lesson for visual hierarchy is not "differentiation is bad." It is "differentiation must match the user's intent state." Adding visual weight to a plan card on a comparison page may actually reduce conversion by interrupting the comparison process rather than guiding its outcome.

That means the headline, subheadline, supporting copy, and CTA are all visible simultaneously. The visual relationship between these elements — their hierarchy, their relative weight, the narrative arc they create together — is experienced holistically.
On mobile, users see 600-800 pixels at a time. The same content is experienced sequentially, in chunks. The visual relationships between elements are harder to perceive because elements that appear on the same screen on desktop appear on different screens on mobile. Hierarchy becomes temporal rather than spatial.
This has a direct implication for how you design and test copy. Copy-heavy changes to pages with primarily mobile traffic will underperform relative to the same changes on desktop-heavy pages — not because mobile users read less carefully, but because the viewport constraint means they experience copy elements in isolation rather than in visual relationship with each other.
Progressive disclosure principles matter more on mobile for this reason. You cannot rely on visual hierarchy to do the work of sequencing information when your user sees only one piece of that hierarchy at a time. You have to design the sequence explicitly, one viewport at a time.
The Practical Framework: Designing for Hierarchy First
From enterprises, here is the framework I use before testing any layout change:
Map the comprehension sequence. What does a user need to understand before they can make a decision? Elements should appear in the order of comprehension readiness, not in the order of business priority.
Audit visual weight relative to behavioral intent. Every element on the page is communicating a priority to the user. Are elements that require action heavier than elements that provide information? Are secondary options carrying the same visual weight as primary ones?
Calculate scroll depth probability for your actual users. Your analytics can tell you what percentage of users reach each scroll depth. Elements below the depth reached by 50% of users are performing at half capacity. Elements below the depth reached by 20% of users are essentially decorations.
Separate desktop and mobile hierarchy decisions. The visual relationships that work on desktop may not exist on mobile. Design each viewport's hierarchy independently, then reconcile.
Test differentiation in context. "Recommended" badges and visual callouts are not universally effective. Test them in the specific context where the user is in comparison mode versus decision mode. The results will differ.
